Lawn grass care: how to keep your lawn thick, green and healthy

Lawn

Why proper lawn care matters so much

Lawn grass is a living organism that is constantly competing to survive. Without support it weakens, goes bald and loses its colour. Proper lawn care is needed not only for looks but for the health of the plants: dense turf holds moisture better, gives weeds no chance and copes more easily with the whims of the weather.

Basic rules of lawn grass care

For your lawn to remain a source of pride, it is worth following the "golden triangle" of agronomy.

Regular lawn watering

Grass loves water, but it cannot tolerate a "swamp". It is better to water rarely but generously (so that the water penetrates to a depth of 10-15 cm) than often and little. The best time is early morning, when the sun is not yet scorching the leaves.

Mowing lawn grass

Mowing stimulates growth. The more often you mow, the thicker your green carpet becomes. The main rule: never cut off more than a third of the grass height at one time. If you have missed the mowing time, it is better to do it in two stages with a break of a few days.

Feeding the lawn throughout the season

Even in the best soil, nutrients are washed out. That is why grass care must include regular "top-ups". In spring we focus on growth, and closer to autumn on strengthening the roots.

Nitrogen fertilisers for lawns: when and why to use them

Nitrogen is a real energiser for plants. It is responsible for that same rich "emerald" shade we love so much.

Why nitrogen is important for lawn grass growth

Without nitrogen, grass becomes pale and grows slowly. This element activates photosynthesis and helps plants recover quickly after mowing or active games on the lawn.

When to apply nitrogen fertilisers to a lawn

The first application is right after nature wakes up. Spring lawn care begins with exactly this nitrogen "vitamin shot". Afterwards, feeding is repeated every 4-6 weeks until midsummer. From August the amount of nitrogen is reduced so that the grass has time to prepare for the cold.

How to apply nitrogen fertilisers correctly

The main thing is evenness. Use special spreaders to avoid a "patchy" effect. It is important to apply the granules before rain or to water the lawn well after the procedure, so as not to scorch the tender stems.

Lawn aeration and soil care

Over time the soil under the grass becomes compacted, and the roots literally begin to "suffocate". Aeration (piercing the turf) opens up access for oxygen and water to the root system. It is like a breath of fresh air for your garden.

Controlling weeds, moss and yellowing grass

Weeds are the main enemy. If there are only a few, hand removal will help, but for large areas it is worth using selective herbicides. Moss usually appears where there is too much shade or water stagnates – here aeration and correcting the soil acidity will help.

Seasonal lawn care

Every season requires its own approach.

Lawn care in spring

This is the busiest time. Grass care after winter includes raking (scarification) to remove dry thatch, feeding and overseeding in places where bald patches have appeared.

Lawn care in summer

In the heat, the main thing is not to let the grass "burn". Raise the mower blades a little higher so that longer grass shades its own roots, and do not forget about intensive watering.

Lawn care in autumn

It is time to prepare for dormancy. We clear away fallen leaves (so that fungi do not develop beneath them) and apply potassium-phosphorus fertilisers for strong immunity.

Common mistakes in lawn grass care

  1. Mowing too low: this is a stress from which the grass takes a long time to recover.
  2. Watering at the height of the heat: water droplets act as lenses and cause burns.
  3. Ignoring winter preparation: tall grass must not be left under the snow – it may rot.

Conclusion

Lawn grass care is not hard labour but a pleasant ritual that repays you many times over. A little attention, timely watering and proper feeding will turn your plot into a true oasis of calm. Remember: the best lawn belongs to the one who enjoys the process of caring for it!
